The role of Social Media in Public Relations.

The role of Social Media in Public Relations.

Today, the prevalence of social media seems to be obvious. Overwhelming majority of present-day society has its accounts in various social networks, and is active users of social media such as Twitter, Instagram, Foursquare, YouTube and so on. Thus, social media become one of the most significant platforms on which any company can find its client. However, it is necessary to understand, that the strategy of the advertising campaign for such an environment requires a unique approach, which could hardly be compared with any other direction of Public Relations activity in the Internet.

First of all we assume that the new types of media create more narrow intercommunication between users and people who are promoting their goods or services. There is a good example, with Instagram. Since this application has become popular among teenagers, it is used as an intermediary for the news distribution. When someone goes to a new restaurant, there is always a possibility that he or she will share this knowledge with friends. It can be assumed that such type of social media as Instagram is a big issue, since millions of photo is flowing every day, and 100 million of people are looking for photos of new places, activities and news.
Secondly, we assume that new types of media create much friendlier environment with a client, and there are some arguments in favor. For instance, if the company has its own Twitter account with the significant number of clients or as they are called followers, it becomes easier to make them aware of the latest news and upcoming events through the posts. Additionally why this communication and distribution of news is friendly it  is because everyone can easily enter the dialogue with important party.
The use of twitter account also provides clients with the possibility of interaction with company they follow. The company should be ready to communicate with the target audience, in real time: responding to comments, handling complaints and answering questions. It is also important to consider that information released by the company using Twitter account could be reposted, what in its turn could increase the popularity of certain company among the users.

The other clear advantage of using social media in Public Relations is the visualization of the activity provided by the company. Today many companies, which are various in their activity and audience have their Instagram profile or even YouTube account. The use of the following social media tools help them to maintain the relations with the clients by visualization of the work, provided by certain company or service providers. Particularly, the use of such new media tool as Instagram became popular in promotion of restaurants and other public entertainment places.
To conclude, today social media play a significant role in Public Relations, particularly when it comes to the promotion of the company or its new product. The possibilities provided by social media tools for interaction help companies to visualize their work, interact with clients, enlarge the number of clients and thus to increase the profits.

The New Rules of Marketing and PR, How to Use Social Media, Blogs, News Releases, Online Video and Viral Marketing to Reach Buyers Directly, written by David Meerman Scott.

The other book I would like to introduce to my readers is also the one which could be quite helpful in understanding Public Relations and the use of Social Media for the promotion The New Rules of Marketing and PR, How to Use Social Media, Blogs, News Releases, Online Video and Viral Marketing to Reach Buyers Directly, written by David Meerman Scott. The given book is thought to be the bestseller due to the originality and freshness of the information presented to the reader. The author focuses on the actual topics for discussion such as viral marketing, which now mostly depends on the social media and the internet. It is quite interesting to see the underside of everyday events, as well as analyze them. Personally I, as a student of Communication and Mass Media major, interested in social media for PR, found the following to be more than just informative.

How to Leverage Social Media for Public Relations Success, Using Social Media to Generate Media Coverage and Improve Brand Sentiment written by Pamela Seiple

Recently my attention has attracted the interesting and I think a quite helpful online book called
How to Leverage Social Media for Public Relations Success, Using Social Media to Generate Media Coverage and Improve Brand Sentiment written by Pamela Seiple. The following book presents by itself a certain guide to the world of Public Relations and its cooperation with Social Media. I found the book to be the one which is quite easy to read, but in its turn the one which present you the information you need to understand the idea of using social media in PR and the following advantages and disadvantages of doing so. Jimmy Choo Trainer Hunt Promotion Campaign.

I would like to share with you the other excellent promotion campaign was the one of fashion brand Jimmy Choo. Of course, for me, as a girl, the given campaign seems to be particularly attractive. So, what did the PR professionals to attract the attentions of the large number of people?
They decided to use such a tool of social media as Foursquare, what seems to me quite an original idea, because I never thought about the promotional power of this source. So, the idea of the following campaign was to hide the pairs of trainers by Jimmy Choo around London, “which people could win using the clues from Foursquare”. This campaign was presented as Trainer Hunt, and slogan call the public to “Follow our new trainers on their stylish journey around London”.
As in the previous case with the Innocent drinks, for me the obvious goal of the following promotion campaign was to make people to talk about the brand, and the best way to engage the biggest number of public is the use of social media. Every new post provided users of Foursquare and Facebook (which was also included in the promotion campaign) with the information about the event.
It is also interesting that the given campaign was hold in 3 weeks, what obviously increased the promotional power of this hunt. Because, people became more and more fascinated with the idea of finding the trainers, and a lot of people still had a possibility to join the campaign. I think here, we can admit the psychological factor of hunting. It is obvious for me, that as the campaign unfolded people became more fascinated with the idea of hunting itself, not the winning of the final prize. The other important point to admit is the possibility to build a certain type of close relationships with the consumer by holding such a social media- oriented campaign.

Social media as a significantly important tool in making Public Relations.

To be honest, previously, I used to take the use of social media in the promotion of well-known campaigns skeptically. Because for me, as for 20 years old student, the social media, presenting by Twitter, Instagram, Facebook and so on was no more than sort of entertainment and tool of interaction with my friends. But, since my major is supposed to be the one, which change our general views on media world, with all its advantages, possible dangers and clear power, my views on the media, and particularly social media changed a lot.
Now I see the social media as a significantly important tool in making Public Relations. It is important to consider that social media mostly rely on the Internet, which provides them with a great power, which helps companies to overcome the obstacles concerning the distribution of the information and attraction of the new clients.
The recent examples of the skilful use of the social media in promotion of the brands or its separate items demonstrates us the originality and freshness of the idea of using social media for PR campaigns. The one of such the excellent examples is a recent “Tweet and Eat Cheap” campaign. The aim of the campaign provided by the Innocent and Holler Digital was “to promote the food brand’s vegetable pots”.
The idea of the following PR campaign was the attraction of the clients through the use of social media. To be concrete,  “…the promotion offered discounts on its vegetable pots, with the size of the discount depending on the number of people tweeted the hashtag #tweetandeat.”
The power of the given campaign is the group-buying power. The use of a hashtag in making the   guarantee that all the people, who follow you on Twitter, or Facebook will also be informed about given (The Innocent) campaign, and as a result, most of them will be automatically subjected to the media influence of the following campaign.
